Doug Miller has held executive leadership positions at Continental Illinois Bank of Chicago in commercial banking, real estate, international leasing, global investment banking and private equity. In 1990, he formed International Private Equity Ltd., a London-based private equity boutique operating in more than 20 countries.
He has been active in charitable work for more than 45 years. In 2003, he discovered Venture Philanthropy, which essentially applies private equity techniques to nonprofits and social enterprises. Along with several others, he created the VP industry on a global basis. The European Venture Philanthropy Association was founded in 2005 with Miller as the founding chairman, and in 2011, he launched and became founding chairman of the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network in Singapore. Together these two organizations have more than 490 members across 49 countries with plans to expand in Africa, Latin America and eventually the Middle East.
Miller was raised in Pittsburg, Kansas, and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1966 with a dual bachelor’s degree in economics and international relations.
Upon graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and extended his tour for one year to obtain officer status and additional Special Forces training. He served in Vietnam from 1968-69 as an officer in a long-range reconnaissance unit and received two Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts and other combat awards.
He returned to KU in 1969 to pursue his MBA degree, graduating in 1971 with Beta Gamma Sigma honors. In 2014, Miller received an honorary doctorate from the University of Warwick for his philanthropic achievements. In 2016, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the KU School of Business.
